Why We Mahj

We are a company founded by mahjong enthusiasts who will drop anything and everything for the chance to shuffle tiles and play our favorite game. Why do we love mahjong so much?

We connect. Playing with bots online is a great way to bone up on your skills, but there’s no better way to to play connect with old friends and make new ones than through a game of mahjong. When we play mahjong in person, we strengthen our existing friendships and extend our circles when new players join. But even friends who are thousands of miles apart can come together online and play the game we love, together.

We organize. Life can be chaotic no matter what stage you’re in. When a mahjong game begins, there is pure chaos. Bams here. Cracks there. No jokers. Not enough winds. No matching dragons. As the game progresses, we organize the tiles in a way that makes sense. We may not always be able to control the things that life throws our way, but in mahjong, we can bring disparate tiles together and make order out of chaos.

We concentrate. Mind numbing phone scrolling isn’t just a habit that plagues younger generations. We’re all prone to mindless activities, whether it’s watching endless Instagram reels about cats or keeping tabs on the 24-hour news cycle. We so rarely have the ability to completely disconnect from the world around us. But when we’re at the mahjong table, it’s as if time has stopped and we willingly and happily dedicate our full attention to the game in front of us.

We strategize. We see the toll that age and dementia have on our parents and grandparents, and we hope that science will catch up before we’re there ourselves. Playing mahjong is a way to keep our brains sharp. Once we have mastered the names of the tiles, the endless rules, and the complicated hands, we must strategize. How do I win with these tiles? How do I stop my opponents from winning? Should I force a wall game? These strategies sharpen our focus and exercise our brains.

We relax. A day at the spa sounds lovely, but that’s a once-in-a-decade pursuit for most of us. Binging a show is a fun way to unwind, but our minds turn to mush after 10 hours of watching Netflix. Nothing makes us relax more than a few games of mahjong. We sit. We sip. We chat. We laugh. We plan. We learn. We grow. We Mahj.
